History of San Antonio Museum of Art
The San Antonio Museum of Art has a long and storied history. The Museum was founded in 1898 as the Witte Memorial Museum. The Witte Memorial Museum was originally housed in the old Lone Star Brewery on the river walk. In 1948, the museum moved to its current location on Travis Street. In 1981, the museum underwent a major expansion which doubled its size. Today, the museum is over 210,000 square feet and contains over 25,000 works of art.
