A Stroll Through History: The San Antonio River Walk
Located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, the River Walk is a network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River. The River Walk is lined with restaurants, hotels, shops, and attractions, and is a popular spot for both locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a leisurely stroll or are interested in learning about the history of the area, the River Walk is definitely worth a visit!
Origins of the River Walk:
The River Walk began as a flood control project in the early 20th century. After a series of devastating floods in the late 1800s, city officials decided that something needed to be done to prevent future damage. Construction on what was then known as the “San Antonio Municipal Water Works Project” began in 1929 and continued for nearly two decades. In 1941, portions of the river were converted into concrete channels in an effort to control flooding. It wasn’t until 1968 that the first section of walkway was built along the river.
Over time, more and more sections of the walkway were added until it stretched for over 15 miles! In 2013, an expansion project was completed that added two new museums, an amphitheater, and several new restaurants and shops. Today, the River Walk is truly a one-of-a-kind destination that should not be missed!
