San Antonio's Six Flags Fiesta Texas
Believe it or not, San Antonio’s Six Flags Fiesta Texas amusement park has a pretty fascinating history. In fact, the land that the park now sits on was once home to a sprawling ranch! Read on to learn more about how this popular tourist destination came to be a part of San Antonio popularity.
In the early 1800s, the land that is now Six Flags Fiesta Texas was part of a 4,000-acre ranch owned by a man named John Coffee Hays. Hays was a Ranger captain during the Republic of Texas era, and he used his ranch as a base of operations for himself and his men. From this ranch, Hays and his Rangers would ride out to protect settlers from attacks by Comanche and Apache tribes.
In 1965, James E. Akin, Sr. purchased the land from Hays’ descendants with the intention of turning it into a cattle ranch. However, shortly after buying the property, Akin began to consider other development options. In 1968, he sold 1,000 acres of his land to a group of investors who were planning to build an amusement park.
Construction on the park began in August of that year, and just 11 months later—on May 5, 1969—SeaWorld of San Antonio opened its doors to the public. The park was an instant success, and it quickly became one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Texas. In 1984, SeaWorld was purchased by Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., which also owned several other theme parks across the country.
In 1988—just three years after being acquired by Anheuser-Busch—SeaWorld of San Antonio underwent a huge expansion project that nearly tripled its size. This expansion included the addition of several new rides and attractions, as well as an extension of its operating season from six months to nine months.
In 1990—one year after completing its expansion project—SeaWorld of San Antonio changed its name to Six Flags Fiesta Texas in order to better reflect its status as a member of the Six Flags family of parks. Today, Six Flags Fiesta Texas is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of San Antonio—attracting millions of visitors each year!
